REVIEW OF 2012

Once again we had three wonderful primula and auricula shows at the Old Barn Hall in Great Bookham – some amazing plants, and exhibitors and judges welcomed from all over the country.

At the main Auricula Show one of our visiting judges – Mr John Cattle - took the coveted Douglas Cup with six beautiful alpine auriculas. He then went on to win the same class at both the Midlands and Northern shows, and the four alpine class in the North East at Newbottle – quite an achievement!

Stunning photographs of some of this year’s winning plants may be enjoyed on the SHOW PICTURES page, and see the EVENTS page for dates of the 2013 shows.

We held a second ‘hands on’ workshop in May open to all comers, this time with the emphasis on getting plants ready for show. Quite a few of us were able to brush up our skills, and thanks to all who helped with the arrangements.

THE AUTUMN SEMINAR AND A.G.M. 2012 Next date for the diary is October 20th, 2012. First off in the morning is the business part of the annual meeting. Afterwards there will be a pictorial review of this year’s shows, and the photographic competition will be making a come-back after many years.

In the afternoon, one of the country’s leading exhibitors of Show Auriculas – Chris Gill – will be taking us through his growing year. Not to be missed – plenty of hints and tips – and everyone, including non-members are welcome. Plant sales too as usual.

E-Mail addresses

l It would be really helpful if Society members would supply the Committee with their email addresses. It makes it much easier if we can contact members quickly when organising events. Of course we undertake not to pass your details to anyone else, or pester you with unnecessary messages. Our Publicity Officer, Lesley Roberts, will coordinate the list. Please send your details to pops08@btinternet.com THANK YOU SEEDS Let’s see if we can do even better with this year’s Seed Exchange – thanks to all who have already donated cleaned seed, but we need a lot more before the closing date in December. Remember, those who give seed get priority when it comes to the allocation! Please see the SEED EXCHANGE page for details.

THE FLORISTS MISSION

The primary aim of the National Auricula and Primula Society is to promote our plants and raise and exhibit new and improved cultivars. This is done according to criteria laid down in the main as long ago as the 1700s by our predecessors, the old time Florists.

If you are new to hybridizing and exhibiting, and would like to get in touch with other members trying to raise new and worthwhile plants, please email the Web Master and we will try to put you in touch with like-minded folk.

If you are a beginner and need help, don’t forget there is a list of people to contact in the latest Year Book.

Allan Guest’s book is now available at a reduced price for members at Society Shows and the annual general meeting– ‘The Auricula – History, Cultivation and Varieties’is a hardback, with lots of fabulous photographs.

There are still a few copies remaining of 'The Auricula' by F.D.Horner,which Ray Weeks produced as a Southern Section publication of interest to all auricula growers.

Originally published in 1877, it was transcribed in the 1955 Year Book of the Northern Section of the Society. It is being serialised in our own Year Books, but won’t be completed for some years. Here’s your chance to get the whole package in one go!
